What is DAC?
DAC stands for Direct Air Capture, which is a technology that captures carbon dioxide directly from the air, rather than from industrial flue gases or organic waste materials (biomass).
Essentially, Direct air capture (DAC) technologies filter and extract carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, for further CO₂ storage or utilisation.
Why is Direct Air Capture important?
Scientists say, that Direct Air Capture has a critical role to play in addressing legacy (or historical) emissions and is a key approach needed to achieve a net-zero emissions future by 2050.
The reason for that is due to the fact that technology is used to remove carbon dioxide permanently through DACCS mechanism (Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage). Together with other CDR technologies, Direct Air Capture is considered one of the key technologies to mitigate climate change.
How is CO₂ captured from the atmosphere?
There are two main ways to capture CO₂ from the air:
- Solid ("Dry")
- Liquid ("Wet")
As names suggest, Solid DAC uses solid materials that absorb CO₂ and Liquid DAC uses a special liquid solution that bonds with CO₂. In both cases, the captured CO₂ needs to be released using temperatures, pressure or electrochemistry.
Notably, Ukrainian startup Carbominer has found a way to combine the two technologies and achieve higher efficiency of the capture.
What are the uses of carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide is used as a refrigerant, in fire extinguishers and medical equipment, for inflating life jackets, food packaging ans carbonated beverages, foaming rubber and plastics, promoting the growth of plants in greenhouses or producing synthetic fuels.
It is also possible to store carbon dioxide underground for a long period, the process is then called durable carbon removal.
As our CO₂ is 99.8% pure, any climate-friendly use case could be applicable.
What is Carbominer's innovation?
